Charles Thomas "Charlie" Irvine passed away on Monday, February 16, 2015, at age 86. A native Memphian, Charlie Irvine was born on November 16, 1928. He was the 5th and last born child of Crawford and Sudie Irvine. Mr. Irvine graduated from Southside High School in 1947. Then he served in the Marines. Charlie Irvine worked hard at Rock Island Railroad, while putting himself through college at Memphis State University. Mr. Irvine and his loving wife, Jo, were raising their five children during this time, the mid-1950’s and early 1960’s. Mr. Irvine became a respected teacher and coach, with the Memphis City School system. He taught Science at Sherwood Junior High School for several years. Working his way up in administration within the school system, Mr. Irvine became the Director of Pupil Services, until he retired in 1994. Mr. Irvine was a devout Christian, who was a very active member of Rebecca Memorial United Methodist Church for several decades, before he became a long-time member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Charlie Irvine married Josephine "Jo" Irvine on September 1, 1950. He was an honorable man and a loving, wonderful husband and father. Charlie and Jo Irvine were happily married for 60 years, until her death in 2010. Mr. Irvine was also preceded in death by his parents and his four older siblings, Robert Irvine, William Irvine, Elizabeth Dunlap and Jack Irvine. Mr. Irvine is survived by his five children, Donna (Steve) Rowland of Germantown, TN, Ellen (Joe) Savage of Germantown, TN, Jim Irvine of Arlington, TN, Paul (Sheryl) Irvine of Olive Branch, MS, and Doug (Debbie) Irvine of Germantown, TN and thirteen grandchildren, Kyra Moseley of Huntsville, AL, Dustin Rowland of Tampa, FL, Maggie Heath of Germantown, TN, Katie Ferrell of Germantown, TN, Ryan Savage of Memphis, TN, Matthew Savage of Memphis, TN, Jeffrey Savage of Memphis, TN, Cherise Edwards of Olive Branch, MS, Candice Plunk of Olive Branch, MS, Joshua Irvine of Olive Branch, MS, Jennifer Irvine of Pointblank, TX, Jacob Irvine of Germantown, TN, Lauren Irvine of Germantown, TN; eleven great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and friends. Mr. Irvine also leaves Sharon Wesson, his sweet care-giver of 17 months. During his lifetime, Charlie Irvine was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, teacher, coach and friend. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. The family kindly requests in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Alzheimer’s Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association. Visitation and Funeral will be at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2404 Kirby Road, Memphis, TN 38119. Visitation will be Monday, February 23rd, from 10 a.m. till 11:45 a.m. Funeral Service will follow on Monday, February 23rd, at 12 noon.
