He settled his family in Fairport, NY and started his own business as a carriage and wagon manufacturer. His home and business were located on East Church Street in the village. Over the years, the business grew and prospered along with the family. John and Sophia became the proud parents of six more American born children.
In June of 1890 and again six years later in 1896, the family sustained serious losses due to two fires that claimed the carriage shop. Not to be defeated, John rebuilt each time. His tenacity and dedication lent itself to his successful thirty-three years as a Fairport businessman.
He was an active member of Fairport Lodge No. 180 A.O.U.W for many years, serving at one time as Overseer and again as Trustee. John also lent his time and talents to the Republican League, serving as a Vice President for a number of years.
Sadly, at age 68, John passed away at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Left to mourn his loss were his wife, Sophia, and his eight children: Frederick, Henry, Ella, Katherine, Freda, William, Roscoe and Caroline.
Youngest son, Roscoe, assumed responsibility of the family business.
