He was a son of Randal Alexander and Sarah (Carothers) Alexander.
He was originally from Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania on September 15, 1862, and was mustered into Federal service at Harrisburg on October 19 as a Private with Company M, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry (161st Pennsylvania Volunteers).
He then rode a roller coaster of promotions and demotions:
Promoted to Sergeant on November 1, 1862, to 1st Sergeant on March 16, 1863, then reduced to Sergeant on April 11, 1864, and reduced to Private on January 5, 1865.
He transferred to Company G on an unknown date. He was re-promoted to 1st Sergeant on August 1, 1865. He was honorably discharged with his company on August 11, 1865.
After the war, he moved to Nebraska and served a term in the State Legislature, either from Namaha or Johnson County (both reported).
He died in his hotel room in South Omaha, Nebraska.
