Jacob Ludlow McCloud was the older son of Martha (Acuff) and Rufus L.McCloud (1850-1934). He was b.Sept 12, 1868 in Union County, Tennessee. I don't know what happened to his mother; I wasn't able to locate her in the Find A Grave system or find a death certificate for her. I know her name because it appears on Jacob's death certificate and because Jacob's father remarried, probably in about 1878 or so, as by June, 1880 he had a baby sister by the name of Artie and a stepmother who was only 9 years his senior. Her name was written on the census as "Scynthia M.McCloud" although she is buried along with Jacob's father at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville under the name "Cynthia (York) McCloud", who passed in 1928 when Jacob was 60 years old. His father died 6 years later, when Jacob was 66 years of age. I am uncertain about their relationship back in 1880 as Jacob was only 11 years of age when the census was taken, not having had his birthday yet that year, and his father didn't list him as 'student' but as 'farm laborer'. He also got his son's year of birth wrong, as I would guess he would have left that up to his wife to keep track of. At any rate, Jacob was living in Knox County, Tennessee when he came to know Miss Ulysis Sherman America Ledgerwood who was 8 years younger than he but I am guessing was just as engaging as anyone of his age. She was one of the daughters of Sarah Jane (Burkhart) Ledgerwood, (1857-1918), a child of Morgan Tennessee Burkhart, who had gained some notoriety for his service rendered the Union Army during the War Between the States. Her father was David Brownlow Andrew Ledgerwood, (1855-1928). She had come from a moderately sized family consisting of seven children and, as was a Burkhart tradition, well educated and strong in her faith in God. The couple bought their marriage license on Dec 5th, 1897 and married in Knox County on Dec 10th. It is the only time I found that she used her full signature of Ulysis Sherman A. Ledgerwood, "U.S.A.Ledgerwood". Jacob gave his vocation as a mechanic for the marriage license. By 1900 their little family consisted of two children, a daughter, Truly, b.Oct.1898, and a son, Earl L., b.May, 1900. By 1910 the family had grown to six children with the addition of Mava A., b.1903, Paul Alvin, b.Sept 4, 1904, James B., b.Sept 17, 1906, and Ralph P., b.1908. John Ty, the last child, was born on Mar 6, 1912. Jacob had entered the lumber business as an adult and the family had prospered, moving to Campbell County before the next census of 1920. The family was living in La Follette, Campbell County, Tennessee by 1930 and it was just Jacob and his wife, (who now went by her middle name) Sherman, and just one son, James, who was in his early 20's. Sherman passed on March 19th, 1935, and was buried next to their son, Earl, who had died in 1925 at the age of 25 yrs. while living away from home in the town of Neon in Letcher County, Kentucky. They were interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in La Follette, Campbell County, Tennessee. (I do not have exact dates or cause of death for Earl). Sherman was buried under the name of Sherman Ledgerwood which confused all but family friends and members in the years that followed. Jacob followed his wife in death on April 3rd, 1947, and was buried near his wife and son. Sons Paul passed in 1979, James passed in 1989, and John died in 1998. I have not been able to locate Ralph or their two daughters, Mava and Truly. May they all Rest In Peace that passes understanding.
