Oren C. Dunn, Former Resident, Dies at Beverly Hills, Calif.
Oren Crothers Dunn, former well known and popular resident of Franklin, died at 4:00, Sunday afternoon, June 30th, at his home in Beverly Hills, California, following a long illness.
Mr. Dunn was born at Hanover, Ind., June 15, 1851. He was the son of Samuel and Martha Crothers Dunn, his father, born in Kentucky and his mother a native of Hanover. They were the parents of eight children of whom Oren C. was the last to survive. The father came to Johnson county in 1852 as agent for the Jeffersonville, Madison and Indianapolis railway, the second agent in Franklin for the old J.M.& I. He was a man of high moral character and unimpeachable integrity. He became one of the earliest bankers in Franklin, serving as cashier in the Franklin Insurance and the Farmers bank both of which he assisted in organizing and for years served as cashier in each.
Oren C. Dunn came to Franklin when two years of age and received his early education in the public schools of Franklin and one year's study in Franklin College. He engaged, as a young man, in mercantile business here in which he was successful. On the organization of the Citizens National Bank, January 3, 1889, Mr. Dunn became a bookkeeper therein, but one year later was made assistant cashier and then cashier, with an outstanding service of sixteen years.
Oil Found On Land-------
Then he was made vice president and held that office until his retirement, after a service of thirty-five years, to move to California in 1923, where on a previous visit to that state he had purchased land near Long Beach, which developed into a rich oil field and where he had since lived. He possessed a beautiful home at Long Beach on the shores of the Pacific but in later years took up his residence in the Beverly Hills, an entrancing section of that country.
While a resident of Franklin, he was a member of the Rotary Club and the Columbia Club of Indianapolis. He received the Masonic degrees in Franklin lodge in June, 1885, Chapter degrees in February, 1887 and Knights Templar degrees in the York Rite, September 27, 1887 and the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite. He united with the Presbyterian church as a member at an early age and for over thirty years was an elder in this church and for some years was superintendent of the Sabbath school. He was also a member of the Society of Indiana Pioneers.
Mr. Dunn was married to Miss Mary Alice Wheat, daughter of William C. Wheat, one of the prominent business men of Franklin, and her death in 1915 was a community sorrow. In 1916, Mr. Dunn married Minnie Coffin Murphy of Indianapolis, who through these succeeding years has been a source of devoted and attentive helpfulness and solace, during the long days of illness and suffering of her beloved husband.
Confined Three Years------
When Mr. and Mrs. Dunn came to Long Beach, they united with the First Congregational church and in 1930, on their removal to Beverly Hills, united with the Community Presbyterian church. He was a charter member of the Pacific Coast Club and member of the Optimist and continued his Masonic interest. He had been in poor health for several years and was confined to his bed most of the time for the past three years.
The funeral services for Mr. Dunn will be held in the Pierce Brothers mortuary, Los Angeles, Tuesday afternoon, July 2, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Buford W. Tyler, who was called as pastor of the Franklin Presbyterian Church in 1909 and served here for several years, but in recent years has been in California. He will be assisted by Dr. Karl Burwell, of the Community Presbyterian church of Beverly Hills, Cremation will follow the services and later the ashes will be interred in the family plot in Greenlawn cemetery, Franklin
Mr. Dunn was a man of strong moral fiber and lived and labored to worthy ends, and his death will be a source for regret by many here who knew him.
Besides the widow, family survivors are William Ragsdale, of Brille, New Jersey, and Oren Ragsdale of Syracuse, New York, nephews; Mrs. Bessie Knowlton of Whiteland, a niece, and Mrs. John Craig II of Long Beach, California, a grand-niece.
