Born November 25, 1985. Matthew graduated from Highland Park High School in 2004 after attending The Forman School in Connecticut for several years. He had just returned to college in Minnesota after visiting Dallas over the Thanksgiving holidays.
People of all ages were drawn to Matthew for his sweet demeanor and dry humor. He loved football, playing golf and hanging out with his widespread friends in Dallas, Minneapolis and New York City. Every holiday was an opportunity to play with his young cousins who idolized him.
In addition to his parents, Robert and Kristine Ackerman of Dallas and New York City, Matthew is survived by his brother Jonathan Ackerman of Minneapolis; grandmother, Jeanne Karlstad of Minneapolis; grandmother, Helen Ackerman of Dallas; uncle, Dennis Karlstad of Minneapolis; aunt and uncle, Barb and Doug Smestad of Sarasota, Florida; an uncle, Neil Ackerman of Dallas; cousins, John and Jennifer Buttles of Dallas and relatives throughout the United States, Mexico and Italy.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held in Dallas on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 3:00 pm at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205, (214) 5232200. On Monday, December 15, 2008 a memorial service will be held in Minneapolis at 5:30 pm in the Augsburg College Chapel, 2211 Riverside Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN, 55454 (612) 330-1000.
In Matthews's memory and to honor his spirit and desire to help others, the Matthew Ackerman Scholarship Fund has been established at the Hazelden Foundation.
