Suggested edit: Mary Jo Van Deerlin, 92 SAN DIEGO - Mrs. Van Deerlin, 92, died in San Diego Hospice October 1. One of eight children, Mary Jo was born in Coldwater, Kansas, April 19, 1915, where she excelled on her high school basketball team. After training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Mary Jo became a registered nurse and was one of the first 10 flight attendants (then called stewardesses) hired by Northwest Airlines when it began passenger service aboard 21-passenger DC-3s in 1939. At the time one had to be a registered nurse in order to be a flight attendant. A wide circle of friends remember her with admiration as a sincere caregiver who always opened her doors to those in need. Mary Jo's love of animals and abilities as a talented cook always meant that no one went without. She will be greatly missed! Married in 1940, the Van Deerlins had six children, James of San Diego, deceased; the Rev. John Van Deerlin, who has served the Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia for 22 years; Victoria, San Diego; Elizabeth Van Deerlin- Rashid, of Hurlock, Md.; Mary Susan, of San Diego and Julian; and Jeffrey, San Diego. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Van Deerlin also leaves four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Memorial services for Mary Jo Van Deerlin, wife of retired U.S. Rep, Lionel Van Deerlin, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2007, in St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Encinitas. A reception will follow in an adjoining parish hall, with interment of ashes later in All Saints Episcopal cemetery, San Luis Rey.
