Samuel Elder was the son of Rev. John Elder and his second wife Mary Simpson (born in about 1832). He married Margaret Espy on 14 Mar 1798 at Old Hanover Church, by Rev. James Snodgrass. The Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church, by Rev. Thomas H. Robinson, D.D, 1878, p 25.

"Margaret (Espy), b. Nov. 8, 1771; d. Sept. 4, 1751: m. Samuel, thirteenth child of Rev. John Elder and his second wife, Sarah Simpson. Samuel Elder was b. Feb. 27, 1772, and they were m. March 7, 1793. They had issue: 1. Ann Espy, b. 1794; m. Alexander Piper and had: 1. Col. Alex. Piper, U.S.A., graduated from West Point in 1851. 2. James W. E. died from wounds received in Civil War.
