Russell E. Compton, 95, of Catlettsburg, KY, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility. He was born on September 8, 1919, in River, KY to the late Liss G. and Cora Ward Compton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Agnes Compton in 2010 and a sister, Vivian Workman. He was a lifelong resident of Catlettsburg and attended the Catlettsburg schools. He was a graduate of Thomas R. Brown High School and was awarded the Eagle Bronze Palm Boy Scouts award. He served proudly in the U.S. Navy and was a Gunners Mate First Class in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and was past president of Eastern Kentucky Funeral Directors Association and then was Co-owner of the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home with his partner Allen J. Collier until it was sold in 1987. He was elected Coroner of Boyd County and served 22 years, and was past president of the Kentucky Coroners Association, was past Vice President of the International Coroners Medical Examiners Association. He was elected as Circuit Court Clerk in 1975 and served 14 years. He served as a member of the committee to build the Court House annex, was a member of the Catlettsburg Leadership Community Development Club, served on the Centennial and Sesquentennial committee, was a board member at Kentucky Farmers Bank for 31 years, was a member of the Catlettsburg Cemetery Board and a member of Catlettsburg United Methodist Church, was a lifetime member of Hampton Lodge #235 F & AM, and the Catlettsburg Elks Lodge BPOE #942. He was a lifelong member of El Hasa Shrine, was past president of Catlettsburg Rotary Club and a member of Paul Harris Club. He retired from the funeral profession when the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home was sold. He is a member of Kenova American Legion Post #93.
In September of 2005, he met Kelly Harper on the bank parking lot and talked about the C & O Depot. He took a great interest in saving the Depot and invested to save the building which was built in 1900. On October 6, 2006, it was dedicated and named the Russell E. Compton Civic Center and Museum. On January 5, 2010, he purchased a C & O caboose, laid the rails in April, and started painting in May. In August, 2010, it was opened for visitors, and Russell was elected a Hometown Hero at that time.
Russell is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris A. Armstrong of Catlettsburg; nephews, Robert R. Armstrong and wife Robin of Ashland, James Armstrong and wife Janet of Bigsonia, PA; niece Mary Allison Burch of Hamilton, OH: great nephews, Rusty Armstrong, Ryan Armstrong, and Drew Burch, and a great niece Lawren Burch. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Steen Funeral Home, with Reverend Charles H. Allen and Reverend Jeff Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in Catlettsburg Cemetery with Military Rites provided by Kenova American Legion Post #93.
