Lloyd Calvert

Lloyd Phillip Calvert, 78, of Belle, died February 27, 2015, at CAMC Memorial Division. He was born December 24, 1936, at Rand, and was the son of the late Ben and Johnnie Clark Calvert of Rand. He was preceded in death by son, George W. "Butch" Pauley.

He was a graduate of DuPont High School (1954); Marshall University (1958) and did post graduate studies at West Virginia University and the University of Charleston. He received a graduate degree in banking from Rutgers University in 1971.

Lloyd spent 37 years in banking and was involved in numerous area business, community and charitable organizations many involving youth and educational programs. His employment career began as a newspaper carrier for both the Charleston Gazette and Daily Mail at the same time in Rand, his hometown, when he was 12. He also worked part-time for WKNA Radio and A&P Food Market on Broad Street while in high school.

He began his professional career as a Travel Development Officer with the WV Department of Commerce. He later became the Assistant Director of the West Virginia Centennial Commission (1963), during which time he was a guest of former President John F. Kennedy at the White House with other Centennial officials. He also assisted in arranging Centennial programs that featured former Presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson along with President Kennedy's visit on Statehood Day, June 20, 1963. He always considered these events as highlights of his career.

At the conclusion of the State Centennial, he joined the former National Bank of Commerce of Charleston in October 1963 as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Assistant to the President of the bank, the late J.E. McDavid. In 1971, he became Vice President and Marketing Director of Kanawha Valley Bank in Charleston. After the bank became One Valley Bank, N.A. he was elected Senior Vice President and Marketing Director and retired in 1998 as Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications for One Valley Bancorp, Inc. He served as a consultant for the bank holding company during its expansion into Virginia until 2000.

He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Southern West Virginia Automobile Club (AAA), having served as Chairman of the Board, Secretary and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Board of WV Youth in Government and was state Financial Chairman for 29 years before retiring from that position in 2008.

Lloyd was a founding member of the Thad Snodgrass Memorial Scholarship Fund for DuPont and Riverside High School students. He was the Fund's first Chairman and served on the Board for many years. He was also Chairman and a founding member of the Kanawha Scholars Fund, which recognized students throughout Kanawha County with scholarships until the Promise Scholarship program was started.

He was active in the WV Bankers Association throughout his banking career. He was a former chairman of the Marketing Committee and former member of the WVBA Board of Directors. In 1996, he was named the WVBA's first "Banker of the Year." He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the WV School of Banking and was honored by the association in the naming of the graduate school "The Lloyd P. Calvert Graduate School of Banking", which is held annually in Charleston. He served as a Marketing instructor at the banker's school for 35 years.

Lloyd had formerly served on the boards of the Charleston Downtown Association; Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, The United Way campaign of the Kanawha Valley; state treasure of the Better Schools Amendment Committee and was a member of the Business, Education, and Economic Development Committee at West Virginia State University; and Charleston Rotary Club.

He was a founding member and first President of the Belle Midget Football Team, and was active in the Kanawha Central Little League baseball program in the Belle area.

He was the longest living member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rand, having joined in 1942. He served in many official capacities at the church including church organist for 51 years. He was a member of No. 158 AF&AM Masonic Lodge at Cheylan, WV, receiving his 50-year pin in August 2008.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris L. Calvert; sons, L. Phillip Calvert, II (Barbara) of Pinch and Eric L. Calvert (Angie) of South Charleston; one sister, Judith L. Russell (Jim) of Charleston; grandchildren, Nick and Natalie Calvert of Pinch, Michelle Pauley LeMaster (Jon), Meredith and Morgan Pauley all of Charleston; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home, Belle, WV.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015, at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home, Belle, WV. with Rev. Michael Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, WV, with Masonic graveside rites performed by Chelyan Lodge No. 158 AF&AM.
