Coast Guard Petty Officer, 1st Class Jason A. Smith of Chesapeake, Virginia graduated from Susquehanna Valley High School in 1997, and from Broome Community College in 1999. Jason enlisted in the Coast Guard in 2000 where he was stationed at USCG CAMSLANT as an IT2. He received a Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Commandant's Letter of Commendation. For his service during the crisis of September 11, 2001, he received both the National Defense Service Medal, and the Transportation 9-11 Ribbon, in addition to receiving the Coast Guard 'E' Ribbon, the Sea Service Ribbon, the Pistol Marksman Ribbon, and the Rifle Expert medal. Jason was well respected and well liked by his peers and always gave 110% to his job in the United States Coast Guard. He was loved deeply and will be missed always. He left an indelible mark on everyone he touched. Jason was predeceased by his grandfather, William A. Bernero; and his grandmother, Frances A. Smith. He is survived by his wife, Leanne L. Smith; his parents, Thomas and Nancy Smith; his brother and family, Christopher, Lori, Spencer and McLain Smith, Endwell; his brother, Eric Smith; his sister and her husband, Heather and Roger Gates.

Jason died in the line of duty at age 26 in a car accident.
