Nettie and her husband, Emerson Jacob Smith, had three children, Stanley, Sterling and Vivian. Stanley died at 16 months. Sterling ran the family business, The White Rubber Company, in Ravenna, Ohio. Vivian, also college educated, was a P.E. teacher. Education was a strong influence in this family.
