Enlisted on 9/3/1861 at Jeffersonville/Big Sewell, VA., he was mustered into Company L, 45th Virginia Infantry as a Sergeant.
Listed on 8/3 - 12/31/1861 Roll as permitted by Dr. Gleeves to stay sick at home in Greenbrier County since 9/17/1861.
(Company is transferred and redesignated as Company C, 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry on 1/15/1862.)
Returns to duty and is listed as Private on duty as Acting Assistant Surgeon 5/21/1862 (date of contract).
Present on all rolls as Acting Assistant Surgeon of Battalion until 10/31/1864 final Roll.
Resigned 2/20/1865.

Postwar he practiced medicine at Cedar Bluff, Va. He married Mary Letitia Spotts 12/7/1867; fathered Chapman Henry, Leland Thomas, George Campbell (later Governor of Virginia), Mattie Low, Wade Hampton, Bessie Valentine.

The 23rd Virginia Infantry Battalion was formed in January, 1862, with five companies, later increased to eight.
