Shirley was born in Rapid City, South Dakota to George Bies and Helen Steen Bies, August 16 1940. They migrated to Washington State shortly after, settling eventually in Montesano where Shirley graduated High School and married her first husband Gordon Zepp. They had a son Mel and later divorced. Shirley lived in the Olympia area most of her adult life and worked for the State of Washington. She married a second time to Tom Daley, whom she later divorced. After her retirement from the State she moved to Shelton where she lived up until a month before her death. She had been diagnosed in the summer of 2014 with incurable small cell lung cancer. She was moved to a nursing facility in Renton Washington near her niece, Jeri. Her wishes were to be cremated and her remains will be scattered on the Hood Canal, an area she dearly loved.

Shirley's ashes, along with those of her 2 beloved cats Precious and Miss Honey, were scattered on June 27 2015 at Twanoh State Park, on Hood Canal, Washington. Present were her brother Don, sister in law Dolores, nephew Darrin, his wife Cyndi and son Donnie; Niece Jeri and her partner Gary; great nieces Andrea and Chantel.
