Mrs. Rebecca Smith Succumbs In 77th Year - Funeral Services In Stockham Saturday
Funeral services for Mrs. Rebecca Smith of Stockham, who passed away last Thursday, were held from the Methodist church in Stockham last Saturday afternoon. Rev. C. V. Powell of Waverly, former local pastor, was in charge.
Mary Rebecca McGrath Smith was born in a sod house on a farm near Canton, Fulton Co., IL, and passed away August 22, 1935, having reached the age of 76 years, 6 months and 10 days.
At the age of 10 years she moved with her parents to Bradford, Stark Co., IL and with her parents at the age of 16 years, moved to Henry, Marshal Co., IL.
On July 28, 1880, she was united in marriage to William Dixon Smith, at Henry, Marshal Co., IL, and started house keeping on a farm near Whitefield Corners, IL, where they resided until they moved to a farm near Eldorado, Clay Co., NE, where they made their home for 35 years living in Stockham since then. Mr. Smith passed away May 8th 1935.
To this union were born 8 children, two of whom preceded her in death. Gertha, aged nine months, Aug 3, 1890 and Ethel, aged 32, July 2, 1920. The others are: Mrs. Elizabeth Rath of Arnold, NE; Andrew of Stockham; Mrs. Laura Coats of Giltner, NE; Earl of Idaho; Albert of Arnold; Mrs. Cecil Bird of Los Angeles, CA. Besides her children she leaves 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one brother, Art McGrath of Aurora, NE; one sister, Mrs. Levi Patterson of Cozad, NE and other relatives and friends.
Besides carrying on the duties of her home, Mrs. Smith did her part in giving cheerful assistance to all proposals for community improvements.
She was united with the Methodist church in her childhood and was a faithful member. She was also an honorary member of the Ladies Aid.
Pallbearers were John Taylor, Bill Negley, George Cameron, Ed Cameron, Percy Caton and John A Traudt.
Interment in Stockham cemetery."
