Willie enlisted in the Marines 30 October 1967, at a recruiting office in Indianapolis,
when he was living in Indiana.
Arriving in Vietnam 4 May 1968, Willie was assigned to Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Napoleon/Saline and operating in the vicinity north of Nhi Ha and 6 kilometers east southeast of Gio Linh, when the Marines encountered a large group pf hostile forces. Willie died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head from hostile rifle fire. The Marines lost 20 men during the intense fighting.
Willie had been in Vietnam for 21 days.
Survived by his mother, Rose L Wright of West Point Georgia, his father; Dave Byrd of Auburn, Alabama and his grandmother; Minnie L Foster of Auburn, Alabama.
