Obituary of Mrs. Daniel Scanlan
On Sunday afternoon, March 2, 1913 at her home in Vail, occurred the death of Mrs. Daniel Scanlan after a long illness.
Mrs. Scanlan was born in Emisty, County Clare, Ireland in May, 1860. In 1875 she came to America and located in Keokuk, Iowa. She married Dan. Scanlan in Chicago in 1879. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters who are Daniel, Bart, James, Mrs. John A. Maloney, Mrs. Peter Brogan, Miss Joanna Scanlan and Miss Margaret Scanlan, all residing in or near Vail. Besides the family there are left to mourn her loss her mother, two brothers, and two sisters in Ireland. Martin and Michael Connelly, Mrs. Geo. Mee and Miss Ella Connelly, also two sisters in South Dakota, Mrs. Mike Harrington and Mrs. Henry Holman. Also eight grandchildren. By the death of Mrs. Scanlan was lost a woman of great and noble character. She was all a mother could be to her family during her life and in her last years was devotedly and lovingly cared for by her family. They did everything they could to lighten her sickness and the best medical attention available was secured, but she has lived a life of fifty-two years filled with deeds of kindness and with good cheer, and the time had come when she was to receive her reward for a life well spent.
The funeral took place Tuesday, March 4, 1913 at St. Anns Catholic Church. A Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Peter Murphy. Interment was at St. Anns Cemetery. The pallbearers were P. Harrington, John Hicky, J. Powers, J.W. Brogan, William Harrington, and John T. Walth.
Those from a distance attending were Bart. Scanlan from Chicago, Mrs. Maurice Farly and Mr. Dan Manning of Sioux City, Ia. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Holman of Belmont, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Maloney of Kenwood, also a host of friends from Denison and vicinity.
