Sally lived in Mendota Heights, MN. Died after being hospitalized for pneumonia in Atlanta. She had traveled to Atlanta to attend her son David's graduation from Emory University. Sally was born in Mankato, Minnesota in 1950, where she grew up and made many wonderful, life-long friends. She graduated from Mankato High School in 1968, and Macalester College in 1972. While at Macalester, she met her husband, Edward. Before having children, Sally taught in the Minneapolis School System and at St. Stephen's School. She earned a Special Learning and Behavior Problems Certificate and a Masters in Education with a reading specialty from the University of St. Thomas. A gifted teacher who worked in inner-city schools with children facing many challenges, Sally was able to inspire her students to succeed. Sally was so determined to help her students that she frequently went to the homes of chronically absent children to bring them to school. As a mother, Sally devoted herself to her own children with equal enthusiasm. She acted as the neighborhood "camp counselor" and her home was the hub of children's activities. She was an energetic and dedicated volunteer at her sons' school, and was a central member of the community. Sally loved that her sons, David and Brian, played soccer, and became one of the first female coaches of boys youth soccer in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Sally's teams had winning seasons, including state tournaments. She loved sports, particularly walking in the neighborhood, water-skiing, pick-up football, swimming, and Lost Lake baseball. Sally's last years with quadriplegia (the result of a bodysurfing accident in 1997) were an enormous struggle for her and her family. Despite her paralysis and chronic pain, Sally retained her compassion, wit, and sense of humor. She fought to be present for her boys as they transitioned into adulthood - this spring, David graduated from Emory University, and Brian from Stanford University. Sally and Edward had three children, Christopher, David, and Brian.
