Allan D. Shook, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, while fishing near Mt. Pleasant, IA.

Cremation has been accorded. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from 12 to 7 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Pleasant at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2013. There will be a private committal at Forest Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Henry County Conservation Board and the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Shook was born August 7, 1926 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Hemstead L. and Clela M. Campbell Shook. He married Jean Wells on June 4, 1947, at Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Shook graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1944 and entered the United States Navy in July of that year. After serving his country for two years, he returned home and graduated from the University of Iowa receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree and a teacher’s certificate. He taught math and science in Danville, IA and Keokuk, IA. In June of 1951 he joined his father and mother in the family insurance agency where he worked until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Rotary, Jaycees, and the Jr. Chamber of Commerce. As a Rotarian, he was involved with the AFS exchange student program and hosted AFS daughters from Finland and Uruguay. These daughters became lifetime family members. He served one term on the Mt. Pleasant School Board, and was a lifetime active member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In his retirement he enjoyed volunteering at care centers, mentoring at the middle school and serving on the Henry County Conservation Board. He was an ardent outdoorsman and particularly enjoyed nature’s beauty with a fishing pole in his hand. He and his dad spent many happy hours together fishing and walking cornfields looking for Indian artifacts. They also enjoyed collecting and polishing rocks. He was an enthusiastic fan of Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant Community Schools, and other area teams. He enjoyed following and supporting many young athletes.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Lynn (Tom) Ellsworth of Mt. Pleasant, and Rebecca (Michael) Williams of Peyton, CO; four granddaughters; two step granddaughters; four great-granddaughters; and one step great-grandson.
