SEA CAPTAIN
Captain Oliver Peterson,
Master of the schooner “Lucy.”

The Captain's Sea Route
Loaded with lumber from the Umpqua River port of Gardiner, Oregon, he sailed the "Lucy" into the Pacific Ocean and south to San Pedro California, a 940 mile journey. The voyage could take as little as 3 days and 14 hours, or as much as 43 days or more, all depending upon weather conditions, especially at the treacherous mouth of the Umpqua River where the presence of ocean currents flowing inward, a sharp turn in the river, variable winds, and constantly shifting hazardous sand bars, made entering the river precarious at best.

Last Voyage
Captain Peterson's Last Voyage
Sailing from San Pedro on Nov 28, 1907, he made his way through heavy winter seas to just short of his Oregon destination in 12 days. Then he tried unsuccessfully for four weeks get across the Umpqua Bar. (No tugs came to assist as had happened 3 years previous when his vessel ran ashore during the attempt) Sailing and drifting around, he was tired and discouraged. Weather conditions were terribly stormy, and it was the worst trip he could ever recall. "Time after time, he had to come about when adverse weather, high seas and contrary currents and bar swells prevented safe transit over the bar." Finally, running out of food and freshwater, Captain Peterson had to give up and sail nearly 400 miles north where he found a safer port at Port Townsend, Washington on January 10, 1908. He died of pneumonia 15 days later.
