Charles H. Clough enlisted on Sep 4, 1861 for 3 years in the 3rd Independent Battery, Wisconsin Volunteer Light Artillery. He mustered into the unit as a Corporal and was later promoted to Sergeant. SGT Clough's unit fought in the Western Theater of the Civil War and was heavily involved in the battles of Stones River and Chickamauga. At Chickamauga, the battery was serving as part of the Union gun line at Dyer's Field when it was flanked by the attacking Confederates and lost 5 of its 6 guns and sustained many casualties. Having reenlisted, SGT Clough mustered out of federal service after the end of the war on July 3, 1865. According to military pension records, he died on Mar 7, 1869 in Olmsted County, MN, and his pension went to his wife, Mary. Other records indicate that a gravemarker was provided to Oakwood Cemetery, Rochester, MN for his grave.
