He was a member of Erlanger United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, was a member of Erlanger United Methodist Men, and taught Sunday School.
He was a member of Kentucky Education Association and KHSAA.
He played football for Newport High School and Eastern Kentucky University, and obtained his Masters degree from Xavier University.
He was owner and operator of Creative Imprints Screen Printing in Erlanger, Kentucky for some time.
In November of 1989 he was honored by the City of Erlanger for the Friendship City Logo design.
He worked as a school teacher at various schools in Northern Kentucky. During his years of teaching, Jerry was on the cutting edge of graphic arts. He started the graphic arts department at Newport High School.
He coached football and wrestling at Newport, Lloyd, Simon Kenton, and Campbell County. While at Simon Kenton and Campbell County he started their wrestling program.

His wife; one daughter: Lynn Abney; two sons: Dave Abney and Scott Abney (Teresa); two granddaughters: Tara Marcum (Allen) and Stephanie Abney; two step-great-grandchildren: Cheyenne Marcum and Andrew Marcum; and many extended family members and friends.
