American civil rights activist and minister. Known as "the Little Warrior" because of small stature, Rev. Barrow served as minister of justice at the Vernon Park Church of God in Chicago and was among the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Council's (SCLC) Operation Breadbasket that would become The Rainbow/PUSH Coalition (RPC) in which she served as National Executive Director and Chairman of the Board. Rev. Barrow studied at Warner Pacific School of Theology, the Moody Bible Institute, Central Conservatory of Music and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the University of Monrovia, Monrovia, Liberia. She was an early participant in the national civil rights movement as a field organizer for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and attended both the 1963 March on Washington and 1965 march at Selma, Alabama. She was the first female to serve as vice president of the Illinois State Ministerial Assembly and was founder of the Rev. Willie Barrow Wellness Center that treats those with limited healthcare benefits. In later years she focused her work on Chicago's gun violence, changes to the Voting Rights Act and advocated for the rights of minorities, gays, women and union members. One of her last missions was the establishment of the Barrow Institute, a legacy program to train and inspire leadership in women. She was the mother of disco/soul singer Keith Barrow.
