Following the death of his mother in 1895 he was raised by his two aunts, Margaret E. (Hurley) Lee (1855-1909) in Brockton, Mass. and Jennie (Hurley) Flavell (1864-ca1919) in Jersey City, NJ.
He married Katherine Anna (Dunlea) (1890-1949) in 1917.
They had the following children: Charles Jr., Richard, Ruth and Arthur.
Circa 1950, he married Gertrude A. (McIntyre)(1897-1976).
Charles enlisted in the US Army in 1913 and served in Hawaii and at Fort McIntosh in Laredo, Texas. He was discharged in 1920 with the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. He worked for many years at the Boston Globe Newspaper as assistant head of accounting.
