She was the daughter of William Dunlea (1855-1895) and Annie M. (Dillon) (1854-1890). Katherine was born at home on Seneca Street. Her mother fell ill shortly after Katherine was born and they moved in with Annie's sister and her husband, Julia (Dillon) and William J. Dempsey. Katherine's mother died eight months later.

She was raised by her aunt and uncle,
Julia Catherine "Julie" Dillon Dempsey (1861-1915)
and
William J. Dempsey (1854-1931)
who adopted her in 1892.

In 1917, she married Charles Leo Spencer Sr. (1890-1972). They had the following children: Charles Leo Spencer Jr. (1919-2001), Richard V. Spencer Sr. (1922-2005), Ruth K. (Spencer) Iovanni (1923-2005) and Arthur C. Spencer Sr.

She was the half-sister of William Edward Dunlea (1875-1888), James Francis Dunlea (1877-1958), Frederick Dunlea 91879-1879), Joseph Michael Dunlea (1882-1943), Mary A. Dunlea (1887-1887) and John Dunlea (1887-1887).
