After graduating from Montebello High School in 1950, Jerry joined the US Marine Corps and was trained at Camp Pendleton. He served in the Korean War from April 1951- May 1952 in the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division (artillery reinforcements), on the East-Central Front. Jerry received the Korean Service Medal with 4 stars, the National Defense Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. His highest rank was corporal. Afterwards, Jerry returned to the U.S. and from June 1952 - Oct 1953 served with the Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division (artillery support) at Pendleton. He completed his Marine duties with an honorable discharge.
In about 1954, Jerry began working at the Jones and Laughlin steel mill in Los Angeles and remained there for 20 years. On August 6, 1955 Jerry married his High School sweetheart Barbara Foster (1932-1988) and moved to Pico Rivera to raise a family. In 1964 they moved to a bigger house in Hacienda Heights. Altogether they had 7 children.
Jerry and Barbara were both active with the local community and at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, coaching girls softball for years.
In 1975, Jerry was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. He died at his home in Hacienda Heights in the early hours of Sunday, November 6, 1977 at age 45. He is buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
He will always be loved and remembered by his children.
