Julia Catherine Dempsey was the daughter of William and Catherine (Murphy) Dillon. The family emigrated from Nova Scotia to Boston in 1863. Her siblings were Annie M. (Dillon) Dunlea (1854-1890), Mary Dillon (1855-1892), Timothy Joseph Dillon (1857-ca1921) and Patrick Dillon (1862-1886).

In 1881, she married
William J. Dempsey (1854-1931)

in Boston, Massachusetts. They had the following children: Mary Dempsey (1881) and John F. Dempsey (1882).

In 1890, Julia's sister, Annie (Dillon) Dunlea gave birth to a daughter, Katherine Ann (Dunlea) Spencer (1890-1949). Annie died eight months later. Julia and William took care of Katherine and adopted her in 1892.
