Charles Austin, 65
Watervliet - Charles J. Austin, 65 of 216 13th Street, died suddenly Monday at his residence. Death was attributed to natural causes. Born in Watervliet, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Edna Mae Racette Austin. Mr. Austin was educated in Watervliet and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served on the U.S.S. Richmond, and also served in the Korean War. Mr. Austin had owned the Tri-City Iron Works in Troy for seven years and later was employed as an iron worker for the John Muir Construction Company for more than 20 years. Mr. Austin was a member of the International Association of Iron Workers Local of Albany and the North Albany American Legion Post. He had been a mineral collector and belonged to the Fulton County Mineral Club. He was also an avid wood carver and was a member of the Wood Carvers Guild.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine Tommasini of Waterford and Bernadette Royce of Watervliet; a son, Charles J. Austin of Watervliet; and a step-daughter, Jacqueline Vincent of Watervliet; a brother, Peter Austin of Troy; as sister, Anne Gmelin of Rochester; and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday from Parker Brothers Memorial, 2013 Broadway, and at noon at Sacred Heart of Mary Church, 1511 Sixth Avenue. Burial will be a Capital City Cemetery in Rensselaer. Calling Hours are at 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Charles' U.S. Navy rank was BMG2, according to his gravestone. The BMG2 rank stands for Boatswain's Mate (shipboard) 2nd Class Petty Officer. Duties of someone with a rank of BMG2 are serving as helmsmen and lookouts; repairing, maintaining and stowing equipment in preparation for underway operations; working in non-engineering divisions of the ship or station; standing security watches while in port and under way; operating sound-powered telephone systems; doing temporary duty for 90-120 days with food services divisions or compartment cleaning; serving as a member of damage control, emergency and security alert teams; participating in naval ceremonies; taking part in underway replenishment (transferring supplies from ship to ship at sea), working with qualified personnel to gain job training and experience.

Charles and Lillian lived in Rochester, NY from 1950 until about 1957. During that time Lillian's parents lived in Rochester and she wanted to be closer to them. They moved back to Watervliet to live with Charles Austin, Sr. When Charles Austin, Sr. passed away in 1957 they stayed in that home until it was sold to Peter Austin in the 1960s.
