She was the daughter of Edward Ryan Sr. (1823-1876) and Mary Ann "Annie" McDonald Ryan (1831-1897) of Mulgrave, Nova Scotia. Her siblings were John (ca 1849-?), Patrick (ca 1852-?), Neil (ca 1858-1941), James (ca 1862-1895), Isabella (ca 1863-?), Charles Edward (1864-?), Edward Jr. (1870-1956), and John Ryan (1873-1895). All her siblings lived in Mulgrave.

In 1880, she married John Clark Banks in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia and had three children.

In 1893, she married Peter Andreas Iverson in Gloucester, Massachusetts. They had a son, Iver Peter Iverson (1893-1933).

She died of complications from childbirth. Her child did not survive.
