Ruben Hellbusch was born December 19, 1923, in Platte County, Nebraska, to Rudolph and Lucy (Hagelman) Hellbusch. He was baptized, confirmed, and attended grade school at St. John’s Lutheran Church (12.5 miles North). Ruben graduated from Kramer High School on May 22, 1941. On September 14, 1947, Ruben was united in marriage to Helen Goedeken at Christ Lutheran Church. To this union three children were born, Nancy, Bev, and Rick.

Ruben was a self-employed contractor in the Columbus area for many years and developed the Ruben Hellbusch Sub-Division. In the late 1970’s Ruben and Helen moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Ruben worked for Peter Kiewit for 12 years. After Helen suffered a major heart attack, they moved back to Columbus to be closer to family.

Ruben was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus where he had served as treasurer. He was a past member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus and while living in Omaha attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Ruben was presently a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he was a Lay Shepherd. On December 31, 1992, Ruben married Lueva Saalfeld Sander at Zion Lutheran Church in Tobias, Nebraska.

Ruben liked to keep busy mowing the farm place, planting trees, and doing any remodeling jobs that needed to be done. He enjoyed bowling, playing Sheepshead, visiting with friends and family, and reminiscing about years past and everyone’s heritage.
