William Barrington m. Nancy V. Holton 26 January 1843, Craven Co., NC.

1850 U.S. Census for Craven Co., NC:

Stephen Barrington M 21 NC; farmer
Adam Barrington M 14 North Carolina
William Barrington M 6 North Carolina
Mary Barrington F 4 North Carolina
Celia Barrington F 3 yrs North Carolina
Maria Barrington F 3 mos North Carolina

William Sr was married previously & Stephen & Adam are the children from that marriage (Louisa Gaskins is their mother). The younger children are William & Nancy's.

William Barrington died 28 March 1859 as shown in his Probate records which named Nancy V. Barrington as his widow. His heirs were named as Nancy, Stephen E. Barrington, Adam Barrington, William R. Barrington, Mary J. Barrington, Celia H. Barrington, Martha E. Barrington, John B. Barrington, & Wiley Barrington. He died intestate (w/o a Will).

Apparently Nancy, went to court against William's children (including her own children with William) for fair distribution (1/3) of William's property as they were refusing to split it fairly under law (the older boys probably). She also requested guardianship of her children with William.

Her suit was entitled "Nancy V. Barrington vs Stephen Barrington, Adam Barrington & Others" which was filed in June 1859. There is also another action involving who is entitled to the family's 8 slaves who are named in the Petition; the Petition requests they retain their percentage of shares re their slaves.

In Sept. 1859, the property was divided, giving Nancy her share. In Dec. 1859, the "Negro slaves" were divided between her & Stephen & Adam. The court papers showed the slaves were in "Lots (i.e. 1, 2, 3) and gave the value of each lot.
