She was the daughter of Frederick S. Lewis (1882-1912) and Ellen "Nellie" (DeWinter) DeCoste (1883-?) and the step-daughter of George Stephen Smith (1881-1959).

She was married to Charles Freeman DeCoste Sr. (1903-1986). They had the following children: Charles Freeman DeCoste Jr. (1927-2008), Janice B. (DeCoste) Newman (1929-2014) and Arlene P. (DeCoste) Hubbard.
