MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS - MR. AND MRS. BALME
MEMORIES OF A LITTLE GIRL who lived next door to Inez and Albert Balme at 706 South B Street, Lake Worth, Florida.
I was a little toddler when my father finished building our home at 706 South B Street. A retired couple, Mr. and Mrs. Balme, lived next door at 702 South B Street.
Most of the community was comprised of retirement age senior citizens. This neighborhood was no different. Everyone from far and near had moved to Florida to retire. The closest child my age was over two miles away. Since there were no children to play with, I became more familiar with those over 65. Though I did visit many homes on the block of those retired, my most frequent visits were to the Balme's home next door. Every time I looked out my kitchen window, there was Mr. Balme working on a new project! This was fascinating to a young active girl. He was always busy fixing one thing or another. He would try this or that. He never seemed to stop working - always busy busy busy. And I was interested!
Mr. Balme was in his garage or back yard throughout the day. I was always running outside to talk to him. I must have been quite the little "nuisance."
Though I was a pesky neighbor who never stopped asking questions, Mr. Balme was never cross with me. He truly must have had the patience of "Job." He was a quiet peaceful man. He was kind in his mannerism. We would sit quietly, and I would watch him intently work.
Mrs. Balme would invite me in and always give me cookies to eat! I would watch her iron in the kitchen. Many times she was busy with the dishes and straightening up the house.
This couple enjoyed sitting in the screened in porch at the back of their home. No one had air conditioning, and often, I would see perspiration dripping down Mrs. Balme's nose. I do remember her having some dark hairs around her mouth with a little mole.
As I grew up, Mr. and Mrs. Balme would invite me to attend the Barton Road Baptist Church Vacation Bible School located near Lantana, Florida. Many times I would visit their church with them on Sunday. You could tell that they had a very strong testimony of Christ and his atonement. I never heard a cross word or loud voices coming from their peaceful loving home.
I do remember my parents being vocal at times during a disagreement. Many times I would hear my father spurt out a bad word or two and I was mortified! Our kitchen window overlooked their screened porch and I was appalled to think that this God loving couple next door might have heard the commotion over our way!
One time during a Baptist District/State "get together", I was told that I was going to represent Barton Road Baptist Church at a competition at the convention. There was a King and Queen that would be chosen. I was told that I would stand and be questioned and that I would be judged upon beauty, poise and response. We were on the way to this event when I was told I was going to represent the church. Much to my surprise, I was chosen Queen! I remember a crown and dozen carnations I brought home. I also remember placing those carnations in the freezer to preserve them!
As I recall these memories, I find my mouth smiling with delight. Many individuals have touched our lives in one way or another. Each has left their imprint upon us. Those who have gone before us have helped us in our journey. They have helped mold our character. We can thank them for the individuals we have become. I skipped my senior year in high school and was admitted to Duke University with an engineering scholarship. I often wonder if Albert had something to do with that. I did ask a lot of questions when he took mechanical things apart and repaired them! I loved the way he would find a solution to every mechanical problem.
And in this light, I want to send thanks to a wonderful couple that made my life happier & more meaningful. I will never forget the two of you, Albert and Inez Balme - my Mr. and Mrs. Balme. I look forward to the day when I see you at Heaven's Gate! We will once again sit down in that screened in porch and talk of what has been going on in our lives!
