John was born at Twynholm, Kiricudbrightshire, Scotland. He immigrated to Providence, Rhode Island in 1853 and then on to California. He and his brother, James started the Hannay Nursery in San Jose. They were one of the leading nurseries in the Santa Clara Valley to start root stock for apricots, plums, peaches and other fruit orchards grown in the valley.
After his brother's death in 1883 the business was broken up to other relatives and he worked for other orchardist.
He married Jessie Wilson Macaulay on 5 June 1873 at San Jose, CA. They had seven children.
He is buried in the Hannay family plot; that he bought for the family; at Oak Hill Cemetery, along with his brother and several other Hannay relatives.
