Joshua was born at his families plantation, Red Hill and died at his home, Round Top in Amherst County. On Dec. 3, 1811, he married Margaret Newman Eubank, who was the sister of his brother John's wife, Ann Newman Ellis. He was a planter by profession. They had issue;
Josiah Corbin, John Eubank, Joshua Shelton, Powhattan Lewis, and Robert Newman Ellis.

Note: The original grave of this Ellis family member was located in the Ellis Family Cemetery at Red Hill Plantation in Western Amherst County. In the 1930's, Rev. Josiah Richard Ellis had all of the remains of the family members removed and re-interred at Amherst Cemetery. The grave is unmarked.
