He was the son of Thomas McCarthy (ca 1862-?) and Ellen (Crowley) McCarthy (ca 1863-?).

He was married to Grace Ella (Green) McCarthy (1899-1977).

He was the brother of Mary E. (McCarthy) Fischer (1888-?), Annie McCarthy (1890-1900), Lillian V. (McCarthy) Donovan (1891-?), Michael Joseph McCarthy (1894-?), Theresa (McCarthy) Brennan (1895-?), and Thomas McCarthy (1898-1963).

He was the "Uncle" of Patricia "Pat" Spencer (1927-2003).

He joined the Boston Police Department in 1919. His first assignment was in Roxbury. Later in his career, he worked at Division 6 in South Boston and rose to the rank of Inspector. He received two letters of commendation from the police commissioner. He retired on disability in 1946.
