His father was from Ohio, his mother from Kentucky.

The Civil War broke out in 1861, but he was living in San Jose, California with his wife and their own young family by 1860.
Meanwhile, back in Mount Sterling, the Union and Confederate troops fought back and forth for domination of the small town. The Battle of Mount Sterling in June 1864, ended in a Confederate defeat. This was the last fighting in Montgomery County.
