He was born July 14, 1855 in Jefferson Co., Ill to Peter Shaffer and Clarinda McLaughlin. He is on the 1860 & 1870 Census' in Jefferson, Co., Ill with his parents and siblings.

His father died in 1871. Later he and 2 of his brothers moved to Missouri.

He married Sally Ann Gibbs in Dunklin Co., Missouri March 9, 1879.

They are on the 1900 Census St Francis, Clay Co., Arkansas with 4 children. They are on the 1910 Census Big Creek, Craighead Co., Arkansas with 3 children and 2 grandchildren.

He had a stroke and was paralyzed for several years. He died January 28, 1915 in Bono, Craighead Co., Arkansas. He is buried at Trinity Cemetery in Bono.

Note his death Certificate shows his name as Luther Martin Shaffer, however, he is best known as Martin, all census records show Martin or Martin L.
