John's paternal grandparents were Robert Lindsay, Jr. (1776-1818) and Letitia Harper (1785-1835). I am afraid I do not know who his mother's parents were. His great grandfathers were Judge Robert Lindsay (c. 1735-1801, m. Ann McGee), who was a Captain in the NC Militia, and a member of the first independent NC Legislature in 1777-8, and Col. Jeduthan Harper (c. 1736-1819, m. Gazeal Parke), a soldier of the Revolution.
John's sisters were Letitia Harper "Lettie" Lindsay (1844-1893, Mrs. Scott, later Mrs. Sloan), Charlotte Eckel "Lottie" Lindsay (1845-1876, Mrs. Peyton), Maria Louisa "Lula" Lindsay (c. 1847-1908), Marianna Regina "Annie" Lindsay (1849-?, Mrs. Reed), Eliza Morehead "Lizzie" Lindsay (1851-1933), Alice Goodloe Lindsay (1853-1888, Mrs. Tate), Kate Austin Lindsay (1855-1855), Emma Perry Lindsay (1857-1859), and a baby born in May 1860, who apparently didn't live very long.
John Austin Lindsay attended Davidson College, in Mecklenburg County, NC, and was graduated in the Class of 1861. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Greensboro, NC, on 5 January 1862, age 21. He served as a First Lieutenant in Co. K, 45th NC Regiment, and was commissioned as an officer on 14 April 1862. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 18 June 1863. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg on 1 July 1863.
Per the Davidson College Alumni Directory, he died near Memphis, Tennessee in 1868. I am afraid I do not know where he is buried. I will add more information when I find it.
Update: Thanks to Find A Grave contributor Lynn McGee (#48537653), I have learned of the tragic fate of Capt. John A. Lindsay. He was killed in a sawmill accident. See the article Ms. McGee added to this memorial.
