Frank was the son of Peter William Forler (1859-1942) and his second wife, Minnie Jane McCool (1869-1942). He married his high school sweetheart, Cleo Marie Daugherty, on January 9, 1922, at the age of 19, after a brief stint in the U.S. Marines. He began a new career at that time as a salesman and then store manager for Kresky and Company, the forerunner to K-Mart. As an employee of Kresky and Company, he and his family moved frequently throughout the Midwest, including Toledo, OH, Aberdeen, SD, Austin, MN, Rochester, MN, Chicago, IL, Peoria, IL, Sedalia, Missouri, and Rockport, IA. He later retired from Kresky and ran a Ben Franklin store in Bloomfield, NE, where he continued his lifelong hobbies of singing, hunting, and fishing. In the late sixties, he and his wife retired for the final time to Bradenton, FL, where they spent many happy years. His wife, Marie, passed away in 1991, and he lived alone for the last year of his life, but continued to travel to see family and to go out with friends right up until his death at the age of 89.

He was the father of three children: Mary Ann Forler, Betty Mae Forler, and Charles Richard Forler.
