Son of Howard Somers and L. Isabell Smith. His parents divorced. His father died of heart disease at 42 years of age.

HOWARD L. SOMERS, 76, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Ellenton, Fla, from 1984 to 2003, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at his residence. Born Nov. 20, 1927, in Fort Wayne, he was a retired Salesman for Sears for 21 years. He was a member of Huntertown United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 82. He served in the Navy during World War II. He loved gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Elthian E. of Fort Wayne; daughters, Cathy Jo (Tom) Bice and Deborah Lou (Bob) Caldwell, both of Fort Wayne; stepsons, Edward (Cindy) Foss of Roanoke, Kim (Elizabeth) Foss of Tucson, Ariz. and Scott (Leilani) Foss of Dripping Springs, Texas; stepdaughters, Roxanna Nofzinger of Albion, Laura Foss of Fort Wayne and Sharice (John) Pinney of Nashville, Ind.; grandchildren, Jenifer, Scott, Cindy, Michelle, Andrew, Jody, Matthew, Gabe, Rachel and Kyle; 22 great-grandchildren; and his four legged son, Cain. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Daniel Foss.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Huntertown United Methodist Church, with calling one hour prior to service. Calling also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave. Burial at Covington Memorial Gardens. Memorials to Huntertown United Methodist Church or donor's choice.
