In 1860, at age 28, Elijah joined the 14th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army. He transferred to the 10th Texas Infantry October 10, 1861. Eleven months later, September 1862, he transferred to the 17th Texas Cavalry.
Elijah is said to have taken his family back to Savannah during the War. Elijah returned to Tennessee after the War ended. Their next four children were born in Hardin County, Tennessee before the next move. .
Elijah, along with his twin brother, Elisha Greene Bivens, and families were traveling from Savannah, Tennessee through Arkansas, heading for Texas. His wife Elizabeth became ill and Elijah had to let the others go on ahead. Elijah never followed. Elizabeth gave birth to their last child and died. Their baby girl was taken in by another woman who had a small baby. Later, Elijah's oldest child, George Washington Bivens and wife, Georgia Ann, kept baby Cora until she was old enough to return to the family.
Elijah married a second time, 23rd of December, 1883 to Harriet Ann Bearden. She had a young daughter and was much younger than Elijah, 30 years. They had nine children together. Elijah was 72 when their last baby was born.
