Silver Star Citation

Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles Wendle Grizzle (ASN: 0-5337895), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in close combat against an armed hostile force while serving with Company C, 3d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Grizzle distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 10 November 1967, while serving as a Platoon Leader on a combat mission near Ap Bac, Vietnam. During the evening, Lieutenant Grizzle alertly discovered a spider hole containing three Viet Cong approximately thirty meters outside his platoon's perimeter. Fully aware that movement beyond the unit's perimeter could mean endangering his life, Lieutenant Grizzle attempted to talk the insurgents into surrendering. After successfully persuading two of the enemy soldiers into giving themselves up, the perimeter suddenly came under an intense volume of automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire from a hostile force that lay hidden in the treeline. Without hesitation or regard for personal safety, Lieutenant Grizzle gallantly stood and began firing on the enemy position. During the ensuing action, Lieutenant Grizzle was struck by a hostile round and was mortally wounded. Lieutenant Grizzle's extreme courage and aggressive determination were an inspiration to all and were highly indicative of his devotion to duty. Second Lieutenant Grizzle's extraordinary heroism while in close combat against a numerically superior Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
