Kenneth G. McFarland, 48, of Duluth made the most of his time balancing his family, his work and his volunteer activities helping people less fortunate. The funeral for Mr. McFarland will be held at 2 p.m. today at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. McFarland died Monday of a heart attack at his residence.

He trained agents and office staffs for State Farm Insurance Co., where he worked for 21 years. The 1971 graduate of the University of Georgia volunteered through his company, his church, the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association and on his own initiative, said his wife, Janice McFarland of Duluth. He was a graduate of The University of Georgia in Athens.

He attended Duluth United Methodist Church and previously attended Chapel Hill Harvester Church, where he started a Boy Scouts program for innercity children and supported medical missions to Honduras.

"He had a real heart and desire to help people who were less fortunate," said his wife. "He believed you should start young and plant seeds in their minds for future development and growth."

Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Kelley C. McFarland of Atlanta and Cassi McFarland of Duluth, and one brother, Danny McFarland of Alpharetta.
