She was born Tabitha Carter, daughter of James Carter and Penatha Leonard Carter. Her siblings were George W. Carter born 1851 and William Carter born 1857. Her grandparents were George W Carter, born around 1780 in Maryland and Ruth Gibbens born 1786 in North Carolina. They lived in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.

The 1853 date of birth is from census records. Her death certificate shows she was around 78 at time of death.

I can’t find the 3 Carter kids listed on any 1860 census record in Louisiana or Texas. Many of the relatives including their parents aren’t found on the census either. Possibly the 1860 census records were destroyed during the civil war.

In 1870 the 3 Carter kids are living in McLennan county, Texas with Thomas G Malone and his children. For some reason Thomas Malone left Ouachita Parish, Louisana and brought the 3 Carter kids with him. Thomas Malone’s wife, Simantha Leonard, isn’t with them, possibly died in Ouachita Parish. It is very possible that Simantha and Penatha Leonard Carter are sisters, both born in the Choctaw Territory.

Tabitha is working as a housekeeper/babysitter for Robert Gibbons family in Bosque county in 1880. She is single. 1900 “Bitha” is still single and works for the John H Rizer family in Bosque county. 1920 “Bethie” moves with the Rizer family to Port Arthur, Jefferson County, Texas. John H Rizer passes away in 1921 with burial in Meridian Cemetery, Bosque county.

Bytha Carter, single, a resident of Jefferson County, Texas died May 7, 1926 while living at the Austin State Hospital in Austin, Texas. Her physician, Dr. G. R. Howard states he took care of her from April 21, 1925 to May 7, 1926. From this I can assume she entered the state hospital on April 21, 1925.

Tabitha had several nicknames, probably given to her by small children that she took care of. The variations in her name explains why I never found any death information about her.

Thank you very much to Cindi Neuman(Fort) for posting her Texas Death Certificate 19668 on her memorial page. Without this I would never have found my great aunt.
