Professional Football Player. For twelve seasons (1952 to 1963), he played at the quarterback position in the National and Canadian Football Leagues with the Washington Redskins, Calgary Stampeeders and Dallas Cowboys. LeBaron holds the distinction as being the first starting quarterback in Dallas Cowboys' history (1960). Born Edward Wayne LeBaron, Jr., he attended Oakdale High School in California and played collegiate football at the College of Pacific. While with the Tigers, he made the football squad at the age of sixteen and played his first year under the legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg. He later played for Larry Siemering and achieved All-American honors while playing at the quarterback, safety and punter positions. Selected by Washington during the 10th round of the 1950 NFL Draft, he totaled 134 regular season games. His professional football career was interrupted, while he served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. During his service, he was a rifle platoon officer and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. While playing football, he achieved Pro-Bowl honors four-times (1955, 1957 1958 and 1962) and attaining his Law degree during the offseason. After retiring as a player, he served as general manager of the Atlanta Falcons and later resumed practicing law. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and has been named one of the Washington Redskins' 80 Greatest Players. Additionally, he was named to the Redskins' Ring of Honor. He received his nickname "The Little General" because of his 5 foot, seven-inch stature which is rather small for a quarterback. The nickname also referred to his military service.
