On the night of March 18, 1880, Nancy's husband James was shot and killed by a party of regulators as they entered his home looking for John Boggs, who had fought with the Field's Partisan Rangers (CSA) during the Civil War. John Boggs was found in the home and later hanged on Big Sinking Creek. Nancy had been hit by a rock and her legs broken by the regulators.
