In his early life, Benjamin was engaged in the coastal trade, but after his marriage Jan. 18, 1775 to Sarah Palmer, daughter of Gilbert Palmer 1725-1804 & Sarah Harrison, and the destruction of his property by the British, which happened soon afterward, he came to Dutchess Co., NY in 1779 where son John Hopkins was born in September. He bought 400 acres of land in the town of East Fishkill, where he passed his remaining years as a farmer.
