Valery “Ben” Brentrup was born on January 19, 1924, a son of John M. and Catherine (Kirchen) Brentrup on a farm in Slope County, ND. He was raised and educated in Slope County.
On December 21, 1945, Ben enlisted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on July 21, 1947. Following his discharge Ben returned to ND.
On August 8, 1950, Ben was united in marriage to Doris Strom in Mobridge, SD. They made their home in Mobridge, and Williston, ND, before settling in Minot, ND in 1957. Ben made a career as a switchman with the Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1986.
He was a very hard worker, and took great pride in the appearance of his yard. He enjoyed growing tomatoes, winter onions and playing card games. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed.

Wife of 64 years, Doris, Minot;
Children: Robert Brentrup (partner Charles Clingman), Brooklyn Center, MN, Diane (Tim) Powers, Fort Worth, TX, Brad (Kay) Brentrup, Minot, Jim Brentrup, Minot, Becky (Tim) Johnson, Hazen, ND, and Donna (Bruce) Schonberger, Minot; twelve grandchildren: six great-grandchildren: a sister-in-law: Frances Brentrup, Phoenix, AZ; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers John “J.C.” Brentrup, Ralph Brentrup and Hubert Brentrup; three sisters Grace Brown, Gertrude Brusich, and Estella Carpenter; Thompson-Larson Funeral Home.
