He was the son of Major Moses Seymour , an officer in the American Revolutionary War, and Molly Marsh Seymour.

Henry left Connecticut in 1801 and moved to Pompey in Onondaga County, New York, where he opened a general store. He grew prosperous with the arrival of new immigrants coming from New England and became a well-known member of the community.

He married Mary Ledyard Forman of Matawan, New Jersey, daughter of General Jonathan Forman and Mary Ledyard Forman. They had a family of six children, among them a son, Horatio Seymour, who was twice Governor of New York and the Democratic nominee for President in 1868.

Their children included:

Mary Jane Seymour 1807-1837 married Rutger Bleecker Miller. See #133075133.

Governor Horatio Seymour 1810-1886. See #5356626.

John Forman Seymour born September 21, 1814.

Helen Clarissa Seymour 1818-1894. She married Ledyard Lincklaen of Cazenovia, New York.

Julia Catherine Seymour 1827-1893 who married Senator Roscoe Conkling.

Sophia Appolina Seymour who married Edward Shonnard of Yonkers.

Henry had an upward political career but finally concentrated on his personal business concerns by becoming president of the Farmers' Loan and trust Company and moved to New York City. The early years of the 1830's were financially rewarding but the New York fire of 1835 and the ensuing finanical panic of 1837 brought an end to his prosperity. He became acutely depressed and returning to Utica inAugust of 1837, he shot himself on August 26th. His burial seems to be unknown but I am guessing that because of the stigma of suicide in these early days, it is possible the family chose not to bury him in an established cemetery. Instead, he may have been buried on private land.
